What 3,000 Miles on the Road Taught Me About Training for the Mountains

Over the last 10 days I have traveled from Montana to Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, Ventura, Bishop, Mammoth, San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, Boise, and back to Montana touring around to local breweries giving a Masterclass talk on pre-season training for skiing and snowboarding. I have also stopped at over 20 ski and snowboarding shops, providing flyers and stickers, meeting and interacting with folks and getting stoked for the season.

The tour didn’t go exactly as planned. I ran paid ads, sent out flyers to the locations months in advance to post up, shared on social media and had the speaking locations share my posts on social media too, and the crowds I was hoping for just never arrived.

At every stop I had full optimism that my ads worked, that people were as stoked as me about pre-season training, and that there would be a room full of people to talk to and convert their interest into sales of my online program.

After driving over 3,000 miles in 10 days, I gained about 40 Instagram followers, and sold a handful online programs. Financially, this tour was a flop.

I could cry, I could give up on the online space, and I could look back with regret about the trip.

The only issue with all of that is that I simply can’t and I simply won’t give up.

I feel in the deepest parts of me that the information I am sharing matters. I want people to exercise to be strong and capable. I want to shout from the rooftops that the secret ingredient to being motivated in the gym is exercising to be strong and capable in an activity that you love.

I know plenty of recreational athletes who have gotten injured from their outdoor sport and been crushed to not be able to do what they love. I firmly believe that training to be injury free and fit for all of life’s adventures is the key to loving your body and leaving body image issues and self-hate in the past.

My steadfast belief in this concept is what has kept me going these 10 days. When nobody showed up to my first event, I could have walked away with my tail in between my legs, but instead I rallied a handful of folks to participate in my talk and we ended up diving deep into all things Powder Prep and did a deep dive into training for surfing specifically. The only reason this event turned around was because I want to spread this message and I believe in it and as someone once told me if you have things to say that you want other people to hear, eventually they’ll listen.

This trip was anything but a flop. It was a challenging and expensive learning experience. It was a beautiful road trip filled with friends and family that I don’t always get to see. It was a trip of networking with small business owners, shop managers, and people stoked for the winter. I learned a lot about hosting events, running ads, and public speaking.

I solidified my confidence in the knowledge that I have and the information I shared with folks. I know that I am good at programming, that I love programming, and that training for outdoor recreation is my bread and butter. I know this information like the back of my hand and I want to share it with anyone that will listen.

I always wanted to keep up with my fiance on the mountain, and since strength training for winter sports, I can not only always keep up, but I never get sore from doing the big, challenging powder days.

I’m not saying this as a flex, but because I want everyone to have a taste of what it feels like to have a killer day in the mountains and know that the next day you will wake up feeling fresh, strong, and ready to hit the slopes again.

I have had the time of my life on this tour. I am excited to meet more people soon, to continue to grow online, to dial in my events to be 10x better next time, and I just want everyone to know that even if you are an amateur, everyday recreational athlete, you deserve to train like the big dawgs do.

Love you, goats <3
